When you browse around Facebook, you will see two different kinds of Facebook use types. Everyone that signs up creates a Profile – complete with your “wall” posts, your Timeline, messaging, photo galleries and so on.
You will also see “Pages”. Pages are created under Profiles and are generally used for businesses, clubs, events or similar.
Many people create Pages for their business. This is great, but why stop there?
I highly recommend creating a full Profile for your business. You have many more tools available when using a full profile.
For an example, check out one of my Profiles, Barretto Bars.
You’ll see that the Barretto Bars Facebook Profile has many friends. The Profile allows for full interaction with these friends.
Once in a while, I’ll post a status update about one of my affiliate product web sites, like Philippine Expat Guide. It never fails to deliver an affiliate sale or two.
They key to using a Profile is that you must interact with others like a real person. Do not use it to simply spam your business or services. You’ll likely get shut down very quickly. You’ll also never gather a significant group of friends!
Here’s an example of a Page: Philippine Nightlife on Facebook.
It follows the Profile’s Timeline layout. If you look around the Page a little, you’ll see it has far less functionality as a Profile. I haven’t used this Page very much, as I don’t see a huge benefit from it.
By the way – the new Timeline layout for Facebook Pages will be mandatory on March 30th. All Pages will convert to this new layout, so get ready with your header graphics or whatever else you might want to change if you already have Pages created.
In short, being on Facebook has huge benefits for your marketing activities. Just be sure to interact, never spam, and provide real value.
